On 01-16-2023 at 2:36 a.m., an officer conducting a patrol in the area of South Hayes Street and East College Street heard several shots being fired. Other officers arrived to assist but were unable to locate the source of the shots. No one was injured and no property was discovered to be damaged as a result of the shots fired. Officers did learn a silver jeep was seen driving at a high rate of speed leaving the area at about the time the shots were fired. Officer located and stopped the jeep in the 1700 block of West Main Street. During the course of the investigation the driver, James E Johnson, 29 of Carbondale, was arrested for Unlawful Use of Weapon by Felon and Operation of Motor Vehicle with Suspended Registration. Johnson was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail. The investigation is active and ongoing.
