Be Safe! Prepare for Hazards

Boating Safety- Web

Before you get on the water, the Carbondale Fire Department would like to share the following checklist to ensure you have a safe boating experience.

  1. Check the forecast with the National Weather Service
  2. Always wear your life jacket
  3. Know your limits - do not go boating if you should not be driving. Drinks and drugs are even more hazardous on the water.
  4. Carry essentials such as drinking water, cell phones, and weather radios
  5. Tell a friend your planned put-in, takeout and paddling routes, along with when you estimate your return time
  6. Make yourself seen by dressing for visibility

Carbondale's Cedar Lake is open to kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Other lakes nearby include Little Grassy Lake, Devils Kitchen Lake, Crab Orchard Lake, Lake Murphysboro, and Kinkaid Lake.

Fore more information on boating safety, please contact the Carbondale Fire Department at 618-457-3234 or visit the National Safety Council website.
