Description: This project is a full replacement of the bridge on Sunset Drive. The bridge is currently in poor condition and continues to deteriorate quickly.  Experts expect the replacement project to take between 45 and 60 days.

Location: Sunset Drive east of the Life Center and west of Emerald Street

Project Cost: $857,894.82

Funding Source: City Local Improvement Fund 

Contractor: ET Simonds Construction, Carbondale, IL

Project Impact: During the construction of the new bridge, Sunset Drive will be closed to all traffic between Emerald Street and Parish Lane.

Construction Updates

11/23/2020 - The construction of the Sunset Drive bridge is complete. The bridge is now open to all traffic! 

11/16/2020 - Construction is progressing as expected. The contractor is currently working on sidewalks, guardrails, project cleanup, and paving. Sunset Drive is scheduled to be open to traffic on Wednesday, November 25. 

10/20/2020 - Crews plans to set bridge beams this week, with paving and cleanup work to begin next week, weather permitting. The contractor is currently planning to have Sunset Drive back open to traffic around November 6, 2020.

10/5/2020 - Pile driving is complete. Concrete work on the abutments and piers is ongoing. We expect bridge deck beams to be delivered and set on Wednesday, October 21. The project is on schedule to be complete by November 6, barring weather-related issues.

09/04/2020Bridge has been demolished and pilings are being set. Road will continue to be closed throughout the duration of the project.
