Tree and Shrub Sale at Home & Garden Expo

Tree and Shrub Sale at Home & Garden Expo

CARBONDALE — Keep Carbondale Beautiful will be selling trees and shrubs in the SIU Arena Parking Lot, outside the Home and Garden Exposition on April 2-3.  All the plants will be native to the area, which means they are better suited to our climate and provide habitat for native species of birds, butterflies, etc.

Keep Carbondale Beautiful Executive Director Sarah Heyer said, “This is the only venue in the area where people can get some of these natives.  People come from a ways away.”

This year there is an emphasis on shorter trees.  “A lot of people have cut down the big trees close to their house.  Smaller trees can provide beauty and some shade without the risk of roof damage in a storm.”   People are also more aware of the problem of invasives. “We will order any tree we can – native or not – except invasives.”  Several alternatives to the ornamental pear will be available.

Heyer encourages people to check the KCB website first (26 different trees and 17 kinds of shrubs are currently on order) and, if they don’t find what they want, to see if it can be special ordered.  Ordering in advance also helps estimate the total needed; adjustments will be made up till March 28.  Pre-ordered trees get a discount.

Most trees sell for $30 and most shrubs for $20 each.  The expected inventory is displayed on the website <keepcb.org/tree-sale>.  Other trees and shrubs can be ordered by contacting KCB at 618-525-5525 or keepcb1326@gmail.com.
