As the days of summer pass by, it will not be long before the restaurants, retail stores and streets are filled with returning students. These three items alone are good topics for individual articles; however I will try to address all three at once. Construction is moving along quickly on the construction of the new McAlister’s Deli in the University Place Center and the City Council recently approved the site plan for the construction of a Panda Express in front of the University Mall. Another eatery that recently opened is Delish Bakery and Restaurant, located across from Hunan on East Main.
Renovation work continues on several retail locations including the former Goody’s space in University Mall and the former Ice Box Grill at 227 East Main Street. The new tenants for these locations will be announced shortly so please stay tuned. Auffenburg of Carbondale recently completed a major sales and service renovation and now Koenig Chevrolet is completing the same process. Both dealers are making significant investments in their businesses. And speaking of auto dealership buildings, the former Saturn dealership building is being transformed into a new and expanded location for Fresenius Dialysis Center.
The last topic is streets and work will begin shortly to resurface Main Street from Wall Street to Glenview Drive. This will include milling of the existing surface and installation of new asphalt. The work will begin after Labor Day and be completed during the evening and at night. The City is completing the installation of a new water line on Schwartz Street between Oakland Street and Eason Drive. Later this summer, we will begin the reconstruction of Schwartz Street in that same area.
I encourage you to get out and visit these new businesses as well as continue to shop locally throughout Carbondale.
