Fire Department and Prevention

The City of Carbondale is served by two Fire Stations located at 401 N. Glenview (618-457-3299) and 600 E. College (618-457-3298). The Department is staffed by 31 personnel and is a professional career department. All fire fighters are certified to the FF II Level or above by the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office. The main office is at the Carbondale Civic Center/City Hall.  The Carbondale Fire Department's organizational structure is as follows:

The Department has a Fire Investigation Unit that consists of four Illinois State Certified Arson Investigators, six Illinois State Certified Fire Investigators and Pal, a Goldador K-9.

The Department has a full time Fire Inspector who is responsible for inspecting all commercial occupancies within the City as well as assisting with public education programs.

Services provided include education, prevention, inspection, investigation, suppression and. Emphasis is stressed on education and prevention to prevent fires and reduce the need for suppression response.

The Carbondale Fire Department is host to one of the first Regional Training Centers in downstate Illinois. A collaboration between the City of Carbondale, the University of Illinois, the Fire Service Institute and the Office of the State Fire Marshall. The Center will serve the career and volunteer fire fighter's professional development well into the twenty-first century. The Center has facilities for simulated burn building evolutions, hi-rise building evolutions, fire apparatus pumping evolutions and classroom environment learning.
