CARBONDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO PRESENT CHECK TO SIH CANCER INSTITUTE

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale Fire Department will present the SIH Cancer Institute with a $600 check from its breast cancer t-shirt sales on Friday, November 17.

Members of the media are invited to attend a check presentation at Fire Station #2 located at 401 N. Glenview Drive at 10 a.m.

Representatives from SIH and the Carbondale Fire Department will be available for interviews.

Southern Illinois University and VFW Post 2605 are teaming up to host a Veterans Day Ceremony to honor the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The event will be held at Veterans Memorial Plaza (corner of Washington and E. Main Streets) at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 10.

There will be opening remarks by SIU President Randy Dunn, a keynote address by SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno and a proclamation by Carbondale Mayor John “Mike” Henry.

City of Carbondale to Receive Finance Award

CITY OF CARBONDALE TO RECEIVE FINANCE AWARD 

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE –
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the City of Carbondale the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

In order to receive the award, the City must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device. 

Budgets must be rated as “proficient” in all four categories as well as 14 other mandatory criteria within those categories.

This is the 31st  year the City has received the award.

The award will be presented to the Finance Director on Tuesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

City of Carbondale to Conduct Housing Survey for Rehabilitation Program

CITY OF CARBONDALE TO CONDUCT HOUSING SURVEY FOR REHABILITATION PROGRAM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – In an effort to continue to bring grant funding to the community, the City of Carbondale will be conducting a housing survey in northeast Carbondale to help determine a target area for future rehabilitation grants.

City staff will be conducting door-to-door surveys from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. now through November.

The survey will consist of demographics and economic and housing-related questions that are required by the state for housing rehabilitation assistance. Surveys will take approximately five minutes to complete.

All of the information gathered will be used solely for statistical analysis and will be kept confidential in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-579). Residents are encouraged to participate.

Carbondale Fire Department to Host Fire Truck Dedication

The Carbondale Fire Department is hosting an official dedication and wet down ceremony for Fire Truck 7 on Wednesday, October 18.

The event will be held at Fire Station #2 (401 N. Glenview Drive) beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The public is encouraged to participate in this event.

Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Meet the Mayor and Chancellor Event

The City of Carbondale and the Southern Illinois University Student Center will host
“Meet the Mayor and Chancellor” on Monday, October 16. SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno
and Carbondale Mayor John “Mike” Henry will be at the SIU Student Center Starbucks
from 11 a.m.-noon. This is an opportunity for students and members of the community to talk to
the Mayor and Chancellor over coffee.

Carbondale Mayor Elected to IML Board of Directors

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is excited to announce Mayor John “Mike” Henry has been elected to serve as a Vice President of the Illinois Municipal League (IML).

Henry will serve a one-year term on the organization’s Board of Directors.

“Through my role on the IML board, I will collaborate with mayors from around the state on issues that affect all of our communities,” said Henry. “I am excited to exchange ideas and share solutions as we advocate for local government at the state and federal level.”

For more than 100 years, the Illinois Municipal League has continuously worked with local communities in Illinois to provide a formal voice on matters involving common interests.

CARBONDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST OPEN HOUSE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – The Carbondale Fire Department will host an Open House on Saturday, October 7 at Fire Station #2 (401 N. Glenview Drive) from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

This is an opportunity for the community to tour the fire station, meet firefighters, learn more about department services and ask questions.

There will also be activities for kids, including a special appearance by the Fire Department’s mascot Sparky.

The Fire Department will also be selling t-shirts during the Open House to raise awareness for breast cancer. T-shirts are $20 and are available in a variety of sizes.

The Open House will kick off National Fire Prevention Week October 8-14. This year’s theme is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”

Carbondale Fire Department Local 1961 will be selling t-shirts during the month of October to raise awareness for breast cancer.
T-shirts are $20 each and are available in a variety of sizes. 
 
Proceeds will support the SIH Cancer Institute Patient Support Fund for breast cancer patients.

BUSINESSES ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN SIU HOMECOMING WINDOW DECORATING CONTEST

CARBONDALE –
The City of Carbondale encourages area businesses to participate in the 2017 Southern Illinois University Homecoming Window Decorating Contest.
This year’s theme is “The Saluki Odyssey: Heroes, Myths and Traditions.”
Window decorations should stick to the theme and highlight Saluki spirit in a unique way.
Applications are available online at https://goo.gl/N6ByhT. The deadline to sign up is Friday, September 29 at 4:30 p.m.
Photos of the decorated windows will be taken on Monday, October 9 and posted on the SIU Alumni Association Facebook page for voting. The top 10 windows will be judged by the Homecoming Committee on Friday, October 13.
The winner will be announced during the SIU Football Homecoming game against Illinois State on Saturday, October 14.
