Navreet Kang

Navreet moved to Carbondale in April of 1989 to open Navreet Kang Insurance Agenc, Inc., which he still actively operates, providing insurance and financial services to both Illinois and Missouri residents.

He is the first Indian American {A Sikh) elected to the Carbondale City Council. He has served the citizens of Carbondale for two terms as Park District Commissioner. He has also served on the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals for 15 years before being elected to the City Council. He is an FCC Licensee, a volunteer DJ and the Managing Director of WDBX Radio, Community Radio for Southern Illinois, a Heterodyne Broadcasting Company holding.

He has been active in many community organizations over the years, including the Kiwanis Club of Carbondale, the Elks BPOE#1243, American Heart Association, and the Jackson County MADD. He served as the Lt. Governor as well as the Distinguished President of the Carbondale Kiwanis Club, where he was awarded the Hixson Fellowship Award as well as the Luis Amador Medallion for his world-outreach service and the local community. He has been instrumental in bringing grants and the Arson Dog Program to the Carbondale Fire Department.

He is a Naturalized U.S. Citizen, born and raised in India before moving to United Kingdom, and then on to the United States. He is married to Sheryl Kang, and has three daughters and one son. He obtained his B.S. {Agri., 1973) and M.S. {Horticulture, 1975) from Punjab Agricultural University, Punjab, India, and his M.B.A. (Marketing/Finance, 1983) from SIUE, Edwardsville, Illinois.
