  3. National Public Works Week: Fill-A-Public Work Truck

    May 24, 2019, All Day

    The City of Carbondale Public Works Department is joining dozens of Public Works Departments from across Illinois to collect food and household goods to support local food pantries in need. Suggested donations: pasta, canned meats, sides, canned fruit, cereal, peanut butter, canned vegetables, toothpaste, cleaning products, diapers, shampoo, soap, toilet paper, paper towels and tissues. All donations will support the Victory Dream Center and Good Samaritan House Food Pantry at University Baptist Church. Donation bins will be set up during Public Works Week at the following locations: Carbondale City Hall, 200 S. Illinois Ave; City of Carbondale Fire Department Station #2, 401 N. Glenview Dr; Carbondale Police Department, 501 S. Washington St; Neighborhood Co-op Grocery, 1815 W. Main St. In addition, donations can be dropped off at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois, 250 N. Springer St, on May 17. Kroger, 501 N. Giant City Road, will also be accepting donations from May 20-24.

  4. Poplar Camp Beach Opens

    May 24, 2019, All Day

    We invite you to catch some rays, relax, and cool off at Poplar Camp Beach. The beach is a well-groomed sandy entry to the cool, clean waters of Cedar Lake. Clean restrooms, picnic tables, a concession stand with cold drinks, ice cream, and a variety of snacks are available to make your visit even more convenient and pleasurable. To reach Poplar Camp Beach from Carbondale, travel south on U.S. Highway 51 to the second traffic light south of Pleasant Hill Road. Turn right on old Hwy. 51 and drive ½ mile to Cedar Creek Road. Turn right onto Cedar Creek Road and follow to Poplar Camp Road on the left (approximately 1.2 miles), across from Union Hill Road on the right. Turn left on Poplar Camp Road which ends at the beach parking lot. The City of Carbondale owns and operates Poplar Camp Beach along with the City’s boat launch and access area. The boat launch is located at the west end of Cedar Creek Road. For more information call 549-8441.
