Meet the Commissioner's

Myah Gary (Chair) - Myah Gary is a doctoral student at SIUC in Health Education and Theatre.  Her sustainability interests are centered on food deserts in urban communities and “food apartheid”. Myah received her Master’s degree from SIUC in 2014 and began her doctoral studies the same year. She previously worked as the Recycling Assistant at the SIUC Sustainability Office where she helped plan and implement a student food pantry, among many other amazing projects.

Aur Beck (Vice-Chair) - is an energy efficiency advocate and is a NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer™ with his company, Advanced Energy Solutions (www.AESsolar.com ). He is a founder and on the board of the Illinois Renewable Energy Association (www.illinoisrenew.org ). He has a weekly radio talk show, "Your Community Spirit," (www.YourCommunitySpirit.org ) but he would like to be known mostly for Oil Addicts Anonymous International (a real 12 step program), www.IamanOilAddict.org.

Audrey Wagner - is a Lecturer at the SIU Department of Geography and Environmental Resources, where she teaches courses in Weather, GIS, and Sustainability.  She is an avid cyclist, both for transportation and fitness.  Audrey has lived in Carbondale for 9 years and thinks the city has great potential to be a model bikeable, walkable, healthy and fun community.

Melody Shimada - has been a resident of Carbondale since 1994.  She holds a MA degree in Anthropology from the University of Arizona and has done archaeological work in Peru. While there, she developed a strong interest in textiles and has continued to pursue weaving. Melody is currently interested in permaculture design and sustainable practices.

Scott Thorne - moved to Carbondale in 1989 to attend SIUC and graduated from the University with an MBA and PhD in Marketing.  He currently divides his time between teaching at SEMO in Cape Girardeau and running Castle Perilous Games & Books in downtown Carbondale.

Sorrel Kunath (Chair) - moved to Carbondale in 2002 and graduated from SIUC with a B.S. in Forest Management and minors in Environmental Studies and Plant Biology.  Sorrel is co-founder and president of Common Greens, an urban greenspace and community garden organization, and owner of Biolutions, a sustainability consulting and certification company.

Cami Sockow - is a Master’s Student in SIUC’s Geography and Environmental Resources program. Her focus is surrounded by the idea of Education for Sustainable Development, specifically Science Education. She has lived in Carbondale since 2005, taking a one year break to teach environmental education in Southeast Minnesota.  She received her bachelors in Outdoor Recreation with a minor in Psychology.

Loren Polley - graduated from Southern Illinois University in 2010 with a B.S. in Geography and Environmental Resources.  He is currently the Refuse and Recycling Supervisor for the City of Carbondale.  Loren is the City’s Staff Liaison for the Sustainability Commission.
