The Carbondale Office of Emergency Management wants to make sure you are prepared for cold weather. Below are some tips from the National Weather Service.
- Check the forecast at weather.gov or your favorite weather app, station, etc. so you'll know when to expect cold weather.
- Adjust your schedule to avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day.
- Protect your pets, livestock and other property, making sure they have plenty of food and water, and are not overly exposed to the extreme cold.
- Make sure your vehicle has at least a half of tank of gas.
- Dress for the outdoors even if you don't think you'll be out much.
- Update your winter survival kit to include the following:
- Jumper cables
- Flashlights
- First Aid Kit
- Baby, special needs gear
- Food and water
- Basic toolkit of pliers, wrench, screwdriver
- Pet supplies
- Battery or hand cranked radio
- Shovel
- Ice scraper
- Extra clothes
- Warmers
- Blankets or sleeping bags
- Charged cell phone
