Train Collision Update

In reference to the train and pedestrian fatality on 09-02-19, the victim is identified as Beverly Carvell, 57 years old of Carbondale.  At this point in the investigation, there is not any indication of foul play related to the incident.  The investigation is still currently active and ongoing.  There are no longer any detours or traffic closures as a result of this incident.

Previous Release -

On 09-02-19 at approximately 6:00 p.m., Carbondale Police Officers responded to the railroad crossing on Main Street in reference to an individual struck by a train.  Officers determined the victim walked east bound across the railroad tracks and a northbound Canadian Northern freight train struck the individual.  The victim died as a result of the collision.  The victim is not being identified at this time pending notification of next of kin.

 Traffic detours are currently still in place.  Motorists are encouraged to use the Mill Street underpass and Pleasant Hill Road overpass for east and west bound traffic.  Motorists are encouraged to use Poplar Street and Marion Street for north and south bound traffic.

The Carbondale Police Department is being assisted by the Carbondale Fire Department, Carbondale Public Works Department, the SIU Police Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Canadian National Police Department, the Jackson County Ambulance Service, and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.  The investigation is active and ongoing at this time.

TRAFFIC UPDATE: A train-pedestrian crash in downtown CARBONDALE has caused Route 13 to temporarily close. Drivers should utilize the Mill Street underpass and Pleasant Hill overpass for east and westbound traffic. For north and southbound traffic, drivers should use Marion Street and Poplar Street.
